DIY Lavender, Rose + Sage Smudge Stick

As I've been prepping for baby boy's arrival, my inner granola has started to come out a bit. I've already purchased a Himalayan salt lamp for his nursery, and as soon as the room was cleaned and prepped for decorating, I decided I needed to cleanse it a bit further.

DIY Lavender and Sage Smudge Stick for ritual cleansing

If you aren't familiar with the benefits of a smudging, some associate this cleansing with ritual on a deeper spiritual level. No matter the conscious intention, clearing space and negative energy from your home, workplace or anywhere you spend a great deal of time is all about creating organization and calm and letting go of old emotional baggage.

Clearing space also renews old and stagnant energy in a space or person and replaces it with a lively vibrancy - perfect for the arrival of a new baby! So I stole the inspiration from my sweet Layered Vintage floral extraordinaire and decided to use what we had in the house + garden to create a lovely smudge stick for the nursery! I even added a bit of rose quartz to mine because of it's a mothering crystal that I've been wearing throughout the entire pregnancy.

What you'll need:

  • White sage
  • Cedar
  • Lavender
  • Rose petals
  • Cotton twine
Now, I started with fresh herbs + flowers because it's what I had, and it's also easier to bundle. You can buy dried ingredients, but they will definitely be more brittle and harder to handle when assembling.

Step 1

This is pretty easy - take a large amount of white sage, combine a handful of cedar, lavender stems + rose petals in a lovely little bundle.

Step 2

Wrap the entire bundle tightly with the cotton twine. If you used fresh ingredients, wait until it is completely dry. The smudge stick must be 100% dry to burn properly, so make sure to be patient!

Light + enjoy! If you want to read more about smudging or need help with the process, check out this post
