Top 5 Essential Oils Everyone Should Use!

Essential oils are one of natures best kept secrets, but over the last couple of years they have becoming increasingly widespread and popular. I jumped on the band wagon at the suggestion of my friend Jessica ( and I have been obsessed ever since. I've bought a myriad of different brands and types since then, but these 5 are my favorite and definitely the most effective. 

A few tips:
  • For essential oils to be effective, you must buy them organic and pure grade
  • Essential oils should be stored in dark bottles and out of sunlight to protect their potency
  • Fragrance oils and essential oils are not the same thing. If you see "fragrance" or "perfume"on the label, you can assume this is synthetic and NOT natural, even if it says "natural fragrance"
  • It takes enormous enormous amounts of plants to produce essential oil. It takes about 3,000 lemons to produce one pound of lemon essential oil. 

So without further adieu, I give you my top 5 essential oils I can't live without:

1. Eucalyptus 

This amazing little oil is obtained from dried leaves of the eucalyptus tree. The leaves are steam-distilled to make the strong and sweet oil.


  1. Skin problems - cuts, blisters, skin irritation & insect bites
  2. Sore muscles
  3. Improved hair health
  4. Fresh breath
  5. Asthma 
  6. Cooling - yes, it cools down the body! Put a few drops in a spray bottle and spray all over your body and your body temperature will instantly start to fall.

2. Lavender

 My favorite essential oil, by far. I use it at least twice a day for a whole mess of different reasons.


  1. Reduces stress and calms nerves
  2. Sleep aid - Spray on your pillow or use the "cupping" and inhalation method. Amazing.
  3. Minor burns - Every time I burn myself while cooking (which is a lot) I immediately treat it with lavender oil. It's a lifesaver
  4. Bees stings, insect bites + cuts
  5. Alleviate nausea or motion sickness -by putting it on your navel or behind your ears, can you believe it?

3. Lemon

I keep my lemon essential oil on hand at my office at all times, in case I need a mid-day pick me up or feel a headache coming on.


  1. Energizing - I put some lemon essential oil on my temples or even on my palms and the scent is instantly rejuvenating when you're feeling sluggish
  2. Soften callouses 
  3. Detoxify the liver

4. Tea Tree

If you're new to essential oils, tea tree oil is probably one that you are already familiar with. It's a little bit of a "jack of all trades" in the essential oil family.


  1. Skin soother - sunburns, acne, rashes
  2. Flea killer
  3. Relieves ear aches
  4. Anti-viral - it can lessen the symptoms of colds and flu

5. Peppermint


  1. Indigestion
  2. Colds and congestion
  3. Headaches - Peppermint is super effective with tandem symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to noise and light

So there you have it, my top 5 favorite essential oils. I highly encourage everyone to try some out for whatever ails you. And while the pure grade and organic ones can be pricey, the high concentration of the oil will make them last for a lifetime.
